holland "So, Mr. Iversen, correct?" Ray took a seat across from Mr. Patterson, fixing his dark brown eyes on his face. "Yes, that's right." He took in the room, some sort of an office, he gathered. Clearly, it had been put together by some high-end designer- all whites and cobalt blues, and sharp corners. The word 'stark' came to mind. "I want you to keep an eye on my sister," All right. Sister. Sure. Ray, hooking his thumbs in his belt loops, kept a steady gaze on the man sitting across the desk from him. He said nothing, waiting for the man to continue. He seemed an average sort, if he had to judge by appearances, not somebody one expected to see behind that big desk. "Lately, someone's been stalking her, though we haven't managed to gather enough proof to get the law involved." He finally cut to the chase. "Do you know who it is? Or why?" Ray leaned forward a bit. "Oh, just some run-of-the-mill stalker, if you can call a stalker that. Why is anyone's guess," "How long are you going to need me around?" Ever to the point, he cut to the chase, believing that this was indeed just a normal case. "Oh... I don't know, a few weeks, maybe? Long enough to either catch the guy or scare him off. Don't worry, you will be well compensated for your time." Mr. Patterson smiled, jotting something down in the corner of a legal pad. "I'll take it then. You have the information file on hand?" He asked, referring to the standard information he needed in regards to the one he was to be guarding. Scanning the desk, he picked out a manila folder thrown on top of an unruly stack of papers and guessed that was it. "Oh, yes, of course. It's a bit sparse, though, isn't it?" Ray thought he detected a note of nervousness in the businessman's tone as he reached for the file. "I don't need to know all that much for an assignment like this one." It seemed simple enough to him. Scare off some creepy guy, keep a girl out of trouble, and make a little money off of it. Cut and dry, no complications.

Stark, was the nicest word to describe the houses stark, angular edges, and minimalistic style. Cold and detached was a better description. As Adeline Walked down the hall of white marble floors and stainless steel walls she couldn't escape the feeling of being exposed the slight reflection of the steel walls produced strange shadows behind her almost like someone was walking behind her, stalking her. For the fourth time since she entered the hallway she looked behind her only to see what she already knew. No one was there. She was safe. She sighed annoyed. The modern design of the house didn't suit her brother, but it gave the impression he wanted. The impression of a wealthy CEO that had it all together and couldn't be pushed around. The man she knew didn't fit that description. She reached the end of the long hallway and knocked on the large white double door. "Come in" She head faintly from the inside. She entered to see her brother sitting behind his desk of white and cobalt with another man sitting in one of the chairs in front of the desk. She could tell her brother was wearing his strait forward business persona that thinly veiled his natural happy, kind, and affectionate nature as soon as he saw her all airs dropped and he smiled widely at her as he stood from his chair and walked briskly over and hugged her warmly. Adeline pulled away from the hug smiling up at her brother,"Hey Jeremy how have you been?" "Great! I- ah" Jeremy seemed to remember himself readopting his business persona he turned to the man who had just risen from his chair. "Ah- Adeline this is Horatio Iverson he'll be joining us for dinner tonight. Adeline looked at the man in surprise Sunday night dinners were family time that Jeremy took very seriously he had never invited someone else for dinner and Adeline couldn't help but wonder why this man was the exception to the rule. He definitely wasn't a business man wearing jeans, a green button up shirt , and combat boots. He was a big burly man easily a head taller than her with dark hair and brown eyes. Maybe he was a policeman but what business would her brother have with the police? She decided to hold her questions for dinner, "It's nice to meet you." She said to the man who merely nodded in response. "Well." Jeremy said clasping his hands together, "lets eat."

It was astounding how much Mr. Patterson's persona changed when his sister entered the room. Pivoting to get a better look at the pair, he summed up the newcomer. Clearly she cared for her brother very much, but beyond that, he was sort of stumped as to why she needed to be guarded. Judging from her appearance, she was competent, at the very least, and didn't look like the sort to get involved with the types that usually made business tycoon family members nervous enough to hire a bodyguard. This must be one hell of a stalker... He concluded.
Mr. Patterson introduced them briefly, then brought up the subject of dinner. Well, he could never pass up a good meal, and it was definitely better than sitting alone in his apartment eating yesterday's leftovers.
"Adeline, starting tomorrow, Mr. Iversen will be your bodyguard." They had hardly sat down when Mr. Patterson broke the news. Of course, Horatio merely kept quiet, as was his habit. He knew that already, after all. Rather, he grabbed a dinner roll and continued on with business as usual. It was strange enough joining what appeared to be a family dinner. He looked up across the table to assess Adeline's reaction, by which he would gauge how much trouble this assignment would be.

Adeline was speechless she opened her mouth and closed it a couple times in search for the right words, they didn't escape her for long. "What makes you think I need a bodyguard?" She demanded. "I mean I know this whole stalker thing worries you, but I am completely capable of taking care of myself. I mean I have black belt in kempo for goodness sake." "I know you can take care of yourself but lets just not take any unnecessary risks. This way that creep probably won't even try to approach you much less try anything." Jeremy said with protective firmness. "Or we could not waste money on a ridiculous extravagance like a body guard. I know we have more than enough money but that doesn't mean we should waste money on something so unnecessary." Adeline said waving her hand in exasperation. "It's for your own safety I would hardly call it an extravagance." Jeremy reasoned. "How is he supposed to guard me when he can't even blend in?" Adeline asked she turned to address Horatio. "I mean no offence Mr. Iversen, but I'm working on my undergrad and you wouldn't really blend in at a college campus. How am I supposed to explain you to my professors and peers? Besides do you really think you can protect me any better than I can protect myself?"

Useless? His eyebrow twitched, but his expression remained otherwise unchanged. That was a bit unnecessary. Then she turned to him. The direct questions caught him off guard. "Besides do you really think you can protect me any better than I can protect myself?" She asked, clearly irritated by the state of events.
"I wouldn't say that." He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, the dinner roll still in his hand. She'll be a handful, assuming I don't get dismissed right now... "While it is my business to protect people, I'm really more of a deterrent than anything else." While the years of sambo training were quite effective with the usual thugs, he had no delusions of that being more efficient than a black-belt. "Or a meat-shield, if you prefer to think of me that way." He shrugged, taking another bite of bread.
"Now, now," Mr. Patterson, seemingly having expected such a response from Adeline (though not so much from the bodyguard) spoke up again. "Please, Adeline, for me? If I'm being honest here, it's more for my own peace of mind than anything else." Ray's eyes flicked back to Adeline, waiting to see what she would do. He would have found the situation amusing, if his next paycheck weren't hanging in the balance.

"Please, Adeline, for me? If I'm being honest here, it's more for my own peace of mind than anything else."
Adeline sighed leaning back in her chair. She hated worrying Jeremy even if his worry was ill-founded. The truth was she would do almost anything for Jeremy he had done so much for her and always looked after her the last thing she wanted to do was burden him. "Fine. I'll do it for you but I have one condition he has to take classes at Everdale I can explain a guy who happened to have the same schedule as me but I will not explain a bodyguard."

That's only fair, I suppose. Though I don't know how well I'll do in a college environment. Ray thought over his previous experiences of schooling, none of them all that great. His sister had always been a good academic, but his attentions had always been absorbed in other things that made him less than impressive, even if he did have the intelligence. At least I won't have to be chasing her around all the time. That's a plus.
"I suppose that's reasonable." Jeremy didn't seem to mind the extra expense so much, and it seemed like pulling the strings to get someone who had nothing but a GED and a subpar GPA in wouldn't be too much of an issue, or at least not judging by his reaction. "Thank you. I know it's a hassle for you."
"Well, if that's all settled," Ray spoke, having finished as much as he was going to eat. "I have some paperwork to do. There's a copy of the schedule in here, right?" He waved the folder in Adeline's direction as he stood up.
"Ah, yes, there should be." Mr. Patterson looked a bit embarrassed.
"Right. In that case," He paused and nodded courteously to Adeline. "I'll see you tomorrow." And with that, he departed.
The next morning, Ray was ready to go. With the help of Mr. Patterson's connections, he'd managed to force his way through the application process and into the classes that he needed to be in to keep tabs on Adeline Patterson. Dressed in a pair of jeans and a black muscle tank, he waited for her. I guess I do stand out. He noted, feeling altogether too many eyes dwelling on him.

Horatio Iversen wouldn't have stood out so much if his shoulders were a few inches narrower and he was six inches shorter, but as things were he was a tall and imposing figure that Adeline had no problem picking out of the crowd in front of the student union. Age wise he probably wasn't much older than the average undergrad student and with his muscle tee and built body he may have passed as a stereotypical athletic frat boy. Unfortunately, his quite serious demeanor and intense size made it impossible for anyone to see him as a college kid of any kind.
Adeline wove her way through the crowd to Horatio, "Good morning Mr. Iversen." Adeline sighed reluctantly and gestured down the walkway, "Lets, ah get to class."
Horatio didn't respond and just matched her pace down the sidewalk. This wouldn't be so awkward if Adeline could think of a single thing to say to him, but nothing came to mind so they just walked across campus in silence.

It was a new experience, sitting in a classroom while keeping tabs on someone. Resting his chin on his hand, he attempted to pay attention to the subject of the class. If there was one thing he prided himself on, it was his ability to go into things wholeheartedly, and this was no exception. Of course, he was still quite fixed on his job, though after scoping out the room and the students, nothing seemed to be particularly threatening. He kept his eyes open, however, for anything out of the ordinary as he scrawled out the occasional note in his chicken-scratch handwriting. Ray noted, with a little jealousy, that Adeline seemed to understand quite well what was going on. It was only to be expected, he told himself. Once the lecture ended, he followed close behind her as she left the room.
"So... Where to next, Miss-" He realized that these were the first words he had said to her all day, and also that he was about to make himself more conspicuous. "What should I call you?" If he stood out already, it would be even worse if he was walking around calling another student "Miss."

"What should I call you?"
Iversen was frank, direct. Adeline finally realized why she had been unable to think of anything to say to him all day, subconsciously she knew that Iversen wasn't the kind of person who enjoyed inane chatter of small talk. If it didn't have to be said, if it wasn't important or very interesting then it didn't need to be said. Perhaps he was a man of little words. Adeline decided she both liked that and hated it no bull shit, but also the constant sense that he was reading and evaluating everything around him, Adeline included. Adelinde didn't like being observed without the benefit of knowing what he was thinking about her.
"Adeline." She responded. "What should I call you?"

"Most people call me Ray. You can call me Horatio if you like that better." He replied bluntly, walking along beside her. After that, he fell silent, having nothing else of importance to say. Glancing at Adeline, he tried to pick up on her mental state. Thinking about something, he was sure, though what exactly was out of reach. Well, he wouldn't worry himself with it, as it wasn't his business what was going on in her head.
He was distracted from this by the feeling of being watched. Straightening his posture a bit, he looked around, trying to see if he could spot anyone suspicious. His brows furrowed as he scanned the area, seeing absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. Ray was hardly aware that his aura had taken on a slightly menacing aspect, mildly uncomfortable with the fact that he couldn't see anything. Of course, it could have just been his imagination, but he'd learned to trust his gut.
"You haven't gotten a clear look at your stalker, have you?" Ray hated to bring it up, but if she could pick anyone out of the crowd, it would be a lot easier to do his job. "Your brother said that he couldn't give me any details himself." That had been a frustration, not knowing who exactly to look out for.

"That's because there aren't many details, if he was just a little more thorough I probably wouldn't even know I had a stalker." Adeline said for the first time noticing a little uneasiness in Hortatio's voice clearly he didn't like asking her about this. "The first time I noticed something was off I was at the library studying I got up to go to the bathroom and when I came back I noticed that the tab open on the browser was different than the one I had up when I left. I knew I hadn't opened the second pocket of my backpack but it was unzipped and I could have sworn the notebooks in the pocket were in a different order. I might have just shrugged it off and thought I was deluding myself but the next morning I walked out to my car it was locked like usual and I hadn't heard the car alarm go off last night but when I got into the car a coupon that I put in the drink holder was on the ground. The seat cover in the passengers seat was half pulled off even though I hadn't had any passengers for a week, but the thing that really gave it away was that my rearview mirror was angled down and to the left from it's normal position. I would have thought I was just crazy but that night an unplaited silver car followed me when I went to the next town over to visit a friend I ended up pulling into a police station to make him leave me alone he kept on driving right past after I turned into the police station. I still didn't get a look at him. He's like a ghost maybe I'm just imagining things, I almost didn't tell Jeremy about it because I wasn't sure it was real."
Adeline stopped for a moment noticing a new expression on Horatio's face, annoyance? She would be annoyed to if she had been hired to protect someone from a figment of their imagination.
"Sorry." She said. "Jeremy overreacted hiring you. I don't mean to waste your time."

Ray listened to her explanation, surprised that she was giving such a detailed answer. Honestly, it was a bit annoying to hear her shrug it off like that. "Sorry. Jeremy overreacted hiring you. I don't mean to waste your time." She concluded. "That's ridiculous." He stuck his hands in his pockets. "You saw what you saw, right? If that's the case, then it's not a waste of my time at all." Chancing another look down at Adeline's face, he managed a small smile that he hoped was a bit comforting. The feeling that someone was watching had faded, and he relaxed his shoulders a bit as he took one more cursory look around. Even if Adeline didn't believe herself, that feeling seemed to support the fact that this mysterious stalker did indeed exist.

Horatio's smile was obviously forced and it definitely didn't suit him, but it conveyed a sincere belief that what she experienced was real. Though she hated to admit it having a bodyguard made her feel safer. Over the last couple weeks some part of her was constantly on guard with Horatio she could finally relax a little. Despite how many times her brain had told her she was overreacting her instincts had kept a guard up. He's really out there, she finally admitted to herself. She shivered at the thought.
******
The day passed at the regular pace as Adeline finished the rest of her classes. At first she had thought Horatio was just faking taking notes for the sake of appearances but she during the last class she noticed he was taking legitimate notes on the lecture. Though she didn't know how much he understood. She was a junior and most of her courses were upper-division there was a lot of information professors expected students to know from prerequisites. She decided not to pry though if he wanted to study for real that was his business.
As the last class let out they walked out of the Political Science building and Adeline turned to Horatio, "Well, see you tomorrow Ray."
She turned and began to walk the three blocks to her apartment.

As Adeline started walking off, he followed as if it were a matter of course. Although she had a rather quick gait, he had little trouble keeping pace on account of his long legs. She doesn't sincerely think I'll let her walk home alone, given the circumstances, does she? As vigilant as ever, he walked a short distance behind her, making no effort to disguise the fact that he was following her. I wouldn't even think about leaving someone alone like this until I have a look around the apartment. Once she was there, she would probably be safe enough, he thought, but until then, it was better to be safe than sorry.

After the first two blocks Adeline couldn't take it any more she stopped and spun around to face Horatio, "Ray you better live in this direction because if you insist on following me home I swear I will practice every bit of my ten years of karate on you and then we will see who should be protecting who."

"Look, I'm just doing my job." He stopped as well, not particularly liking the idea of having to defend himself from the person he was supposed to be protecting, but still finding it an incredibly amusing scenario. "It's just that if this guy can get into your car, then he can probably get into your apartment. And of course, there are even fewer people out on this route than there are walking around on campus." Ray watched her reaction, his eyes taking on a hard expression. There's no way I'll slack on this job, even if I have to fight the client to do this right... So much for 'cut-and-dry'.

"So you want to check my apartment to see if it's safe?" Adeline asked already knowing the answer. She took in a deep breath trying to control her anger. "Ray, yo-"
She was interrupted buy the vibration of her cell phone in her pocket "Just a minute." she said to Horatio seeing it was her brother.
"Hey Jeremy." She said trying to adopt as normal voice as possible.
"Soooo." Said Jeremy drawing out the word a bit too long. "How is the body guard thing going? You know he's known for being the most thorough in the business doesn't overlook a thing, crazy observant."
"Yep, he's thorough alright." Adeline said trying not to let an edge creep into her voice.
"Good. Great! Then I'm sure your safe. Do you feel safe?"
Adeline repressed a sigh, "Yeah, I feel safe. Hey Jeremy can I talk to you later I need to get home and do some homework."
"Sure thing! Study away my dear, sweet, safe sister!" Jeremy sang through the phone.
Adeline said her goodbyes and turned to Horatio, "Come on, lets get this over with." She turned around continued down the street toward her apartment.

Horatio was about to reply with a to-the-point 'yes' when Adeline's phone rang. Judging by the look on her face and the way she was talking, he guessed that it was Mr. Peterson (.sic) on the other end of the line. "Come on, let's get this over with." That was a bit of a surprise. The two carried on down the street until they came to the building. Doesn't look like anything special... It struck him as a very average sort of place. That impression was confirmed when Adeline unlocked the door and gave him a look into the room. It wasn't anything pretentious, or even particularly nice. He made his search quick and discreet, making a mental floorplan of the apartment as he went.
"All right. Safe. I'll see you tomorrow morning." And with that, he made his exit. This will be an interesting assignment. He thought, heading back home. His apartment wasn't much better, to be honest, and a quite a bit messier. He thought about cleaning up, but instead sat down and took out his notes. What does this even mean? He flipped through them, absorbing what he could, and then headed for the internet to see if he could find any explanations.

The next couple days went by in the same way, Horatio met Adeline at her apartment accompanied her to class and club activities then he escorted her home and checked that the apartment was safe. Nothing out of the ordinary happened and no signs of the stalker had appeared. Friday came and Adeline and Horatio arrived at the apartment.
"Things have been really quite since you started guarding me." Adeline told Horatio, "I think we scared him off, so why don't you relax you don't need to check the apartment."

"Probably did." Ray replied, debating whether or not to insist on checking it out. It did seem as if the mysterious stalker had left, as they hadn't seen any evidence of him in the past week. "Here." He scrawled his cell number on a scrap of paper. "If anything comes up, call this number." While he was still a bit antsy about not checking the room, he knew that it wasn't a rational feeling that was making him uneasy. He waited for her to enter the building before he turned away. Ray glanced around the seemingly bright and safe neighborhood, leaning against the corner of the building. There wasn't any rush to be anywhere, especially if it were going to be his last night on this job.

Adeline stepped opened the door and immediately noticed something was wrong the place was trashed couch cushions ripped off, dining chairs overturned, and cabinets open their contents strewn across the apartment. She wandered in taking in the mess when she headed down the hallway toward her room when a figure with a black sweat shirt jumped out of her utility closet and ran towards the guest room.
"Hey!" Adeline yelled running after him. "Stop!"
He ran to an opened window and began to climb through just as Adeline grabbed at his ankle and missed. He jumped out of the window onto the garbage can below and ran down the alleyway.
Adeline heard her front door slam open and turned around to see Horatio rush in.

Ray had been about to leave when he heard a loud clatter from the side of the building. Snapping to attention, he caught someone who seemed to have jumped from the window disappearing down the alleyway. His first impulse was to chase after him, but then he realized where he must have come from. Without a second thought, he burst into the building and was in Adeline's apartment in a flash. "Are you all right?" He took in the state of the apartment- it was a total mess. That's the last time I'm making an exception to principle... Damn. Ray, having located Adeline, calmed down a bit, steadying his breathing.

"I'm fine." Said Adeline brushing off his concerned look.
Something on the ground caught her eye a sheet of paper folded in quarters. She picked it up and unfolded it, the inside read.
你的大朋友不许保你。 你知道你错。我站罪的Peterson。
"What the hell is this?" Adeline said she turned to Ray brow furrowed mind racing a hundred miles an hour. She handed him the note. "He's not a stalker."

"What does this mean?" He tilted his head, clearly unable to make heads or tails of the message. She can read this? He thought, impressed once again. "Anyway, there's no way I'm dropping this detail now. Not until I'm sure this guys out of the picture." And that was where he put his foot down. He got the feeling that she wouldn't protest, at least, not out loud, after what had just happened.

"It's Chinese." Said Adeline. "It says 'your big friend can't protect you. You know you're wrong. I will end the sins of Peterson.' I don't know who this guy is but he's not an obsessive type of stalker. He has some kind of beef with me. I think this whole time he's been stalking me for information. Wait."
The realization swept over Adeline like a wave. She wasn't the target. They note said 'you' over and over again but at the end said 'stop Peterson'. Why would he suddenly change from and indirect 'you' to Adelines last name? If he was referring to her Chinese grammar rules demanded her name be placed before the verb but in this case it appeared after the verb indicating a third party and implying a non human entity. He was reffering to her brothers company Peterson Pharmaceuticals.

[[Yup, yup, said that out loud, got it, Holland.]] "I that case, you'd better get used to me." Ray folded his arms, trying to absorb it all. This was big, much bigger than he had expected. This could get dangerous. He began preparing a mental list of things that he would need on hand in the next few days. "You should tell your brother to keep his guard up. He could be in danger as well if they're after the company." Why they were after her was a mystery to him, but he reminded himself that it wasn't his job to go after he 'why's of the situation.

With little more than a nod, Ray followed, highly alert. After something like this, he knew he probably wouldn't sleep that night. Well, so much the better. It didn't take them long to find Jeremy Peterson. It seemed that Adeline knew precisely where he would be. They caught him at the airport, right as he was about to pass through security. "What are you doing here?" He turned around in the line, much to the consternation of the others queuing up. Of course, he seemed rather confused by seeing the two of them there. "Something came up. We need to discuss it. Now."
