Wherein Johan finds a very tiny baby bunny under his porch, and the ever trusty Mason just so happens to live close enough to assist.

"What is this?" Johan had only intended to get this rubbish out into the garden to set and fertilize everything before it became too cold, but there seemed to be something darting out from one of his bushes under his porch. Cocking a brow slightly, the German knelt down and felt around under it. It was soft...? Brow furrowing further, he cupped his hand about the small fuzzy thing and bring it closer. "Was zur..?" It was a rabbit. Johan stared down at the little thing wiggling in his hand, face blank. It was a little baby rabbit, and it felt cold, and it wasn't moving, and oh no, what if it was dead?! What if he killed it?! "Mason!? Mason, pick you your phone, I sweat to Gott!!"

Mason had been in the middle of enjoying his day off, sitting on the couch in a sweater and drinking a cup of good coffee. Then, his phone began to vibrate. I wonder who that could be. He looked at the caller ID and immediately picked up. If it was Johan, it had to be important. "Hello, you've got Backhash. What do you need, chief?" He was already at the door, putting on his boots and trying to remember where he had put his coat last night when he had gotten home. Usually, it would have been in the front closet, where it belonged, but it had been a long night and he didn't remember if it had made it that far or not.

It wasn't moving. It wasn't moving, and the phone was not being picked up, and it was cold, and-! Oh, Gott zur Danke! "Backhash, you need to come over, now!" the police chief panicked, balancing his own phone on his shoulder while using both hands to cup the still little furry body in his hands. "I found a rabbit under my porch step, and it's cold and not moving, and what do it do!?" Most of what the panicked blond said afterwards was in either an extremely thick accent or in pure German, but it was obvious to tell that he was still rather upset about this.

"What, that's what this is about?" He asked before he had the chance to check his words, half-way into his jacket. "All right. I'll be over in a few minutes. Just... Take it inside." He tried to pick his way through the fluent German as he headed out and started his car. As promised, he was there within five minutes. He knocked on the door as soon as he arrived, hands in his pockets to keep them warm. He wasn't sure he could do much, but clearly this meant quite a bit to him if he had called in in such a panic.

Those five minutes felt like the longest Johan had to suffer through. He sat, quietly, with the little bunny in his hands, sitting at his small dinning room table. "Bitte, don't be dead, bitte don't be..." he whispered, hands shaking for a moment when he heard the doorbell. Hesitantly, he set the little thing down on the table and scurried to the door, almost throwing it open. There was a moment where he was tempted to simply drag Backhash inside, but he held in some restraint. "Dinning room. Now." he practically barked.

Mason didn't much care for his tone, but ignored it for the time being. "Where is it?" He looked around, expecting it to be on the table or thereabouts. There didn't seem to be anything resembling a rabbit anywhere. He gave Johan a worried look. Perhaps he had fallen ill? He looked pretty normal, other than the degree of worry in his expression.

[Hehe~ They are all cinnamon buns~]
Oh, no. Oh, no, this could not be happening! Johan was practically scurrying all about the dining room, now, his worry certainly increasing. "It was on the table" he insisted, smoothing his hair back nervously. "It was so small, where could it have gone?! I.. I don't think it could have gotten up and gone far at all while I was gone, but-! It was right there!"

"It is a rabbit... Well, you're right, it can't have gone far." Mason peered under the table, then got down on the floor to get a better view. Let's see... It was cold, so I'm assuming it was headed for somewhere warm. "What's the warmest spot in this room?" Mason stood up, hoping this would give them some direction. Otherwise, it would be a matter of waiting and hoping it hadn't gotten its self into any trouble.

Johan needed a moment to reform some of his composure, almost biting his nails down further than they where already trimmed. "Alright, ah, er... There is a small vent there, in that corner. It should be rather warm," he sighed. Hopefully, if the small thing had jumped down off the table, it wasn't hurt. It was quite a hight for something so tiny to fall from.

Mason looked to the vent, which was behind a small shelf near the corner. Surely enough, there was a small ball of fuzz sitting on the vent. "Here it is." Mason moved slowly, trying not to startle it. It seemed quite content where it was, and as such didn't move. With a quick movement, he scooped the small rabbit up. Being suddenly displaced, it started to struggle, but calmed quite easily once it felt Mason's body heat. Clearly, it didn't much care for the cold. "Do you have somewhere to put it?" He brought it towards Johan, only barely suppressing a smile. This was all too cute.

"Oh, Gott ze Danke..." Johan relaxed a noticeable fraction when the little ball of fluff was discovered and picked up with very little fuss. Sighing, he gave the little ball a small stroke with the tipon one of his fingers, smile soft. "Ah... Well, I hadn't gotten that far, just yet, but I know I have a box and a few towels that should do well enough for now..." The German double checked that Mason's hold on the little bunny was firm, but gentle, before leaving the room, again, to gather what they may need to house the small thing.

"You're trouble," Mason, as soon as he was sure Johan was out of earshot, spoke to the rabbit, which was still giving him a panicked look. "But you are cute." He smiled at it, watching its quick breaths. Johan was back soon enough. "Okay... So, what are you going to do with it?" Mason handed it over. "I don't think it'll do so well out there at this time of year, especially if it doesn't have a mother."

The police chief had laid several spare towels inside the bottom of a shoe box he had kept around, making it almost a nest. He set it on the table, fussing with a corner of the nearest towel for a moment before gingerly accepting the little rabbit. "Don't be scared..." he whispered, setting the bunny down in the middle of the fabric. "There...." Sighing, Johan sat himself down at the table, keeping a close eye on the little fuzz ball. "I'll keep it here, for now... It it becomes too much, I'll find someone who can. But I don't think it will be going outside, again, in this weather..."

"I guess that's the best thing to do at a time like this." He watched attentively as the bunny nosed around the small enclosure, ceasing its frozen panic. "Hey... Do you have a pot of coffee on? You look like you could use some." Clearly, whole situation had been rather stressful, which was very odd, all things considered. Mason decided that it would be best to just take it as it came, at this point. I'll have to tell Rae about this one... He thought as he nosed through the kitchen, thinking of a former partner who had been quite successful in her new location.

"Nein...Ah, no, I don't have coffee on," Johan murmured, glancing over to Mason as he began looking about his kitchen. "I... could use some, though. I have instant in the cupboard, above you, and beans elsewhere." The German's fingers hand subconsciously dipped into the box with the bunny, one fingertip brushing against the soft gray fur of the little creature. "Mugs are over there."

"All right." Mason determined that a cup of instant would be good enough to tide the chief over until the pot was finished brewing. While he was here, they might as well talk business, though he didn't really want to on his day off. "Here. So... If you don't mind my asking, what's so important about this rabbit?" He asked, still confused by how upset Johan had become over the matter. It certainly wasn't what he had expected from the man.

"I.... Am not completely sure," the blond admitted after a minute of thought. "It's just.... It's practically a child-rabbit, a kit... It was not moving, and it was cold to the touch. I could not leave it out there to surely die as much as I could leave a child of my own species to a similar fate." Johan sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose faintly with the hand that had the least contact with the rabbit. "I will admit the reaction was... extreme, but I had no clue what to do, and I quickly feared for the worst."

"Ah. Empathy, then," Mason commented briefly. It made sense, in its own way. "So... Anything new on the Henderson case?" It was beginning to sink in that he was currently spending time with his boss on his day off. Not exactly what I intended to do today... Oh well. Could be worse. He recalled one day in particular that stood out, but determined that it was best to leave that where he wouldn't have to think about it.

The German immigrant gave a slight nod, removing his hands entirely from the box with the rabbit, though keeping the small creature in his peripheral vision. "Nothing new has come up,yet... Lawyers are doing their jobs very well with this one, but we will hopefully have a warrant, tomorrow, to search the house. Hopefully, something will still be there for us to use."

"Yeah... Well, they lawyered up early on in the game." Mason shrugged, going back for another cup of coffee. "Hey... Where'd it go?" Mason, passing the box, peered in. There was no bun.
Winters, in town for the first time in weeks, strolled along the residential streets. Her hotel had been quite close to the suburbs, and so she had set off into them when she became restless. "Well, would you look at that..." She paused, looking down at a frozen ball of fuzz in the middle of the sidewalk. "You're either very brave or very stupid." She spoke to it, seeing it was still breathing. Before it could bolt, she caught it by the scruff of the neck, holding it up for further inspection.

Johan nodded gravely at the statement. Then, of course, he barely held himself back from tearing the box apart when it was pointed out that there was, indeed, no bun in it. There seemed to be a quiet moment of the German's refusal to go back into a large-scale panic where he stood up and cleared his throat. "I have a feeling.... that is will not be sitting next to the vent, this time," he muttered, taking another deep breath to contain himself. The hunt was on. Again.

"Um... Sir, the door is open." Mason noted, the cold winter breeze seeping in through the door. He had a sneaking suspicion that the rabbit wasn't even in the house any longer.
"Well, you seem awfully tame." Looking at it, though in appearance it looked like a wild rabbit, it wasn't acting like one.

Johan's face said it all, but his mouth did indeed chip in. "How is the door open?!" he hissed, hands slamming upon the table hard enough to send a few of the objects that rested upon it to the floor. "How!?" It was certainly looking more and more like a blood vessel was going to pop somewhere on his person.

"I don't know," Mason, once again surprised by his usually phlegmatic boss's reaction, jumped, accidentally elbowing a lamp and sending it crashing to the floor.
"What's that?" Winters, ever vigilant, heard shouting and the sound of something breaking. She nearly forgot she was carrying an animal as she headed for the nearest house. The door was open. Instinct kicked in, and she peered through the open door, just about ready to burst in and make an arrest. "Mason?" She said aloud, surprised. "Rae?" He stared back at her. "What are you doing here? And why do you have..." He looked even more confused as he noticed that she was carrying a rabbit.

Johan gave a low groan when the lamp met with the floor. Great. Now he'd need to get a new one. He pinched the bridge of his nose tightly, as it doing so would suddenly staunch the flow of his nerves. "Rabbits, especially of that size, should not be able to open doors."
Then, of course, Mason made the chief aware of the person right outside of said door. Of course Winters had to show up, didn't she? "Rea Winters, would you kindly come inside and greets up both as opposed to peeking through my front door where I can't even see you." he ground out, quite... irate.

"Sorry," She replied sheepishly, coming in, still holding the rabbit. "I thought I was about to interrupt a domestic in progress." There was her business face, grey eyes trained steadily on the target of the words, cold and hard. "What are you doing here?" Mason, used to her manner in such situations, wasn't much put off by it. "I'm here on vacation. The commissioner was going to strangle me if I built up too much off-time. It comes with being married to the job." She shrugged, shifting her hold on the bunny.

Joahn gave a curt nod, finding little reason to dwell further on that comment about this being a domestic. He would admit, it likely had sounded like such a thing. He did not say much, simply looked the woman over for a moment before his eyes caught on her hand. Well... It seems the rabbit either could open doors or it had somehow been left open, because he could think of no other explanation as to why that bunny would be in her hands.
With a soft mutter in his mother tongue, the blond stepped over to Rea's side, delicately removed the rabbit from her hands, and moved to sit down, again. He kept the ball of fuzz in his hands, this time. It was obvious that every time he let it leave them, it will mannage to run off somewhere and give him a heart attack.
