"I live here. Of course I don't mind sand." Jean laughed, fixing the splint once more. "More tea? Or would you rather play a game of whist? I'll admit I'm not that good, but it's better than sitting here and staring at the wall." Jean suggested a change in their activity. He so rarely had the chance to entertain, he hope quite well that he would do well, especially when his guest was so enjoyable to be around.

The seaman could not help the faintest of smiles at the laugh. It had been a while since he had heard such pleasant sounds. Alfred schooled his expression, though, keeping it neutral. Now was far from the time for this... "I am fine, as far as tea," he assured, glancing down at the Frenchman. "Some whist, though... would be a pleasant alternative." He could not keep staring at the wall like this, and he knew it.

"I'll get the cards, then," Jean, barely containing his excitement, got a well-used stack of playing cards from the deal table and shuffled them. "Here, cut, please," He held the deck out to Alfred, all the while going over the rules again in his mind, trying to keep them straight. He had never been one for games like this, never quite had a turn for them. But, he would play anyway. He knew who frequented the whist parlors in town, as many of them were on the higher end of the pay grade, and had seen the captain there with some frequency.

Alfred watched with lightly lidded eyes as Jean scurried off and grabbed the worn deck of cards. He held in a smile at the excitement he could feel thrumming slightly in the air. This man was social, and it was painfully obvious that living in a place such as this did not lend it's current occupant to many social encounters. "I do hope you will at least attempt to be a challenge," the captain rumbled, cutting the deck neatly.

"Well, I'll give it my all, mon capitaine." Jean dealt the hand and the game was on. He hadn't been lying when he said he'd try his best, but as he had expected, he was racking up a majority of losses. Before the two knew it, darkness was falling. The light coming in through the buckling boards of the ship's side was waning, and the temperature began to drop. "Ah. I haven't much lantern oil, so I hope you'll forgive me for only using a small amount to prolong our game. If you feel tired, you may sleep on the bed." Indicating said object with his shoulder, he lit a sparing amount of oil in his lantern to allow them to see the cards. I shall do just fine in the hold, I suppose. It shouldn't be too cold down there. Of course, sharing a bed would be a fine thing, but... Well, he certainly wouldn't care for that. Of course, preoccupied with planning for the near future, he made a critical mistake in his playing.

As expected, Alfred did not hold back. If he was doomed to be here with this criminal, he might as well beat him at whist as much as possible! It was at least better than sitting in awkward silence. Soon, though, the waning light from the world outside this little wreck was noted, and with a small huff, the Brit let the lamp be lit with little complaint, only partially focusing on the words. Sleep. Can take the bed. Not much oil, so don't keep the game too long. This, he could do, with a mistake like that. "Don't fear...I believe you've just handed me my last victory for the night," the captain clicked, face still passive, but a slight gleam still in his eyes. "I doubt you'll be able to recover anything to take me down before I've completed the next couple hands needed to cement it."

"All right, all right," Jean replied, though he smiled. This was a side of the captain he had seen only when he was thus employed, and it certainly was his favourite. "Seems you've beaten me once more. Right, then, sleep well. If you are awake before I am next morning, help yourself to whatever you can find. I haven't much in the way of victuals, but what's mine is yours." And with that, he descended to the above-water portion of the hold. Settling himself behind a heavy barrel to prevent himself from rolling down the incline (and into the icy water) in his sleep, Jean fell asleep.

The navel man waited quietly until Jean had left the room before even attempting to stand, again. He busied himself until then with the cards, returning them into a single stack and giving them a brief shuffling. Soon, though, it was simply Alfred and the small lamp, and he rose, carefully, to his feet. With enough of a mind to at least carry the lamp with him to assure nothing was in his path that would interfere with his less mobile leg, he came over to the bed and sat himself down upon it. It would have to do... Reclining and blowing out the lamp, he, too, fell asleep.
The moon had not yet reached its peek by the time noises began to tumble down into the hold. Groan and restless shifting of wood made up the most of it.

Jean, used to hearing little but the lapping of the sea during the night, was easily roused by the sounds. What is going on up there? He blinked, realizing that it was still night. Whatever it was, it didn't sound good. He was back up to the stateroom in a moment, knowing the wreckage well enough to climb in the dark. "Captain?" He opened the door and peered in. No, that isn't good.

It felt like his leg was catching fire. it was not yet enough pain to fully wake the captain from his slumber, but it was enough to make it far more fitful. Alfred tossed and turned, throwing himself from one position to the next in an almost violent frenzy that managed to move the cot along with him, to an extent. His face was reddening along with the flesh of his injured leg.

"Perdenkley," Jean grabbed his shoulder and pinned it to the cot in an attempt to get him to sit still. He's awfully hot... Getting a good look at his face, it certainly appeared that the captain had a fever. "Hey, wake up," He touched the man's forehead with his other hand, trying to get a better idea of his temperature. Running a bit too warm... I hope an infection hasn't developed... Worried, he gave Alfred another gentle shake in an attempt to wake him the rest of the way up.

The captain twisted and fought against the currently unknown force now holding him. All he really knew at the moment was that he did not want to be held down and that someone was doing just that. Thankfully, that response and the gentle shake was enough to bring his full mind back around. it took his mind a moment to register the face above in the dark of this unfamiliar space, but Alfred soon regained his wits and his memories of the activities of that day before. "Bloody Frenchman...." he grunted, trying to bat his hands away."What..?"

Under normal circumstances, Jean would have come back with a joke, but he was too worried to be sarcastic. "You were having a fit, that's what. You're running quite a temperature." Rummaging through the chest in the corner again, he came back. "Chew on this, if you think you can stay awake long enough. Willow bark." Unusually snappish and commanding, D'armistead took a seat on a nearby crate, watching with narrowed eyes. Perhaps it was something about his past that made him lose it entirely when it came to matters like this, or maybe he was just soft. He didn't know, exactly, but he knew he wasn't himself when it came to illness.

This was, indeed, odd. He may not claim to know Jean D'armistead personally, nor ever wished to, but Alfred certainly knew that any time he had interacted with this man, he had not been like this. What he was calling for, though, seemed to make sense. There was a certain exhaustion that was clinging doggedly, even after what felt like enough time to awaken more fully. Surely, he must have had some sort of fit to have brought the other back into the room and to feel such weariness. The captain let out a resigned huff, taking the bark and chewing on it when it was given. There was a slight ache in his head, anyways.

Jean was more pleased than he felt he should have been that the captain had accepted the febrifuge. I guess I'll just stay here. He sat himself down off to the side, intending to make sure that his condition didn't worsen. "Any better?" He asked after a while. His tone had taken on a milder version of his usual snark, and there was genuine concern in his tone. Clearly, he thought the situation was quite serious.

Alfred let his jaw work, swallowing every once and a while to get what was needed from the bark. Time passed and the bark had long turned into a fiber-y mush wadded up within his cheek. Jean had barely moved enough to confirm he was still breathing. "Somewhat better," he grunted, depositing the used bark into his hand and glancing about for somewhere to put it. "There is a dull ache, but it is fading..."

"Wonderful." He folded his legs, watching intently. "Just toss that out the window, there." Jean shrugged, noting that the captain had gotten about as much usefulness out of the bark as he possibly could. Clearly, he had no intention of leaving for a while yet.

The used bark was tossed out the window as told, and Alfred settled himself down into the cot, again, eyeing Jean. Sure, he didn't feel... anywhere near completely fit, but this was still odd. "Do you plan to sleep sitting up?" he muttered, shifting to find a more comfortable position. The temperature just did not feel right.

"If I must. It isn't the weirdest way I've slept, not by a long shot." Jean smirked, thought there was a certain nervous apprehension behind his eyes. Alfred certainly did seem a bit better than he had before, but of course that wasn't a promise that he would stay that way. "You know, you're never going to get to sleep if you keep flipping over like that." After watching the captain adjusting his position for several minutes, Jean was beginning to feel uncomfortable by proxy.

The sailor gave a low grunt at the almost too obvious comment Jean had tossed to him, flipping over yet again to look him in the eye. "I have been able to sleep on my own for most of my life, D'armistead," Alfred muttered, brow furrowing deeper. "I cannot get comfortable enough to do so, at the moment. It is not pain, simply a draft... I will be fine soon enough."
