Just testing out our characters for On A Falling Tide. The situation: Alfred, having gotten into the cave holding the wreck of the HMS Sterlet, has been injured in an accident, leaving him rather vulnerable. Jean, living in said cave, is left to deal with the consequences.

He probably should have expected the rocks to have been that slippery, where he being honest with himself. It was a dark cave by several bodies of water, and logic would obviously dictate that there would probably be water in the cave in some form. This being said, Alfred had not been as careful as he should have been, and it was too late to change much about it.Even with his lantern held aloft,it was fairly difficult to see where he was going. Thus, when the slippery earth beneath his feet gave way, there were too few alternative paths available before he was plummeting down, down...
He could still feel and hear and move, somewhat, so the seaman knew it could have been worse. His head felt like a goose egg had surely been whacked into it, and the warmth underneath it certainly was not water. His ankle was throbbing harshly, having been caught on something on the way down, and gave a very painful shock of agony at too much weight. The lantern, of course, had not survived the fall at all. Alfred could feel a few shard that had not embedded themselves in his muscles on his chest, but he did not dare more for fear of slicing himself on one of the likely many unseen siblings the glass panes had birthed So he sat, keeping himself calm, and waited for something, anything, to change.

It was just the sound of the waves lapping against the walls and his own breathing, just as usual. Jean, sitting in the gutted captain's quarters, which he had fitted for his own use, tapped his fingers against the seasoned wood of a deal table that had survived the half-sinking of the ship. A walk would do me good... The chest containing a good supply of his most frequently used supplies sat against the far wall, drawn there by its weight on the gradual incline. He flipped open the lid and took out a torch, along with his flint. Agile, he shimmied down the rope out the window, the way he usually got in and out of the ship, and waded to the shore. Picking his way along the shore, he came to the terrestrial mouth of the cave, which was very, very dark. Lighting the torch, he carried on into the cave. Jean stopped short, hearing a shout and the sound of falling rubble, followed by a flinch-worthy 'thump' and shattering glass. Who could that be? Curiosity overcoming his common sense, he sought for the source. Relying on his hearing rather than the light of the torch, it took a short time to find it. "Why, if it isn't the captain!" The remark was more to himself than to the injured man. His first impulse was to help- he wasn't in good shape, bleeding in several places, and clearly having difficulty moving on his own. Of course, his better sense made him keep a distance, at least for the time being. From his former run-ins with this particular officer, he knew that he was not exactly well liked. Then again, he was a man of honor, from what he had heard, and probably wouldn't resort to tricks to catch a mere thief.

The bobbing light of a torch was welcoming, in a carnal way. At least he could see, now, the captain's thoughts muttered. He certainly did not like said sight. For one, the damn pesky thief was here, holding said torch. If he was here, than chances were extremely slim of there being anyone else here, and a better look at his own leg was certainly proving he would probably be needing at least a supporting hand to get much of anywhere.
It was a miracle his face only suffered a few minor scratches apart from the bump and its scrapes, but lower down was not as lucky. He could feel his ankle attempting to swell in his boot, already, and it was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. larger shard of glass was slicing into Alfred's calf on his other leg, and a few others had followed suit on his right arm and chest.Letting own an almost shaking sigh, the officer narrowed his eyes at the criminal looking down upon him, almost resigned to fate. "And if it isn't the thief."

"What are you doing down here?" He asked, picking up on the increasingly irregular pace of his breathing. To hell with it... Pasting his usual Cheshire cat smile on over the worry, he approached slowly. "Well... I suppose it'll be easier to respond when you're not bleeding. Stay still." He nimbly climbed up the short way to the place where Alfred had come to rest. He he took the corner of his sleeve in his teeth and tore off a strip. "I might regret this, but I'd rather you not die here, so..." He trailed off, attempting to stem the most profuse bleeding by pressing the cloth into the wound. Once that was done, he'd see if he couldn't get the injured man back to a place where he could actually see what he was doing.

"I could ask you the same..." Alfred muttered back darkly, keeping a wary eye on the criminal as he came closer and closer. The man hadn't ever wanted him dead, before, but in such a situation as this, the Brit could never be too sure of anyone's intentions. A hiss of pain ground out when the small strip of cloth was pressed against the largest of the cuts on his body, which happened to be near his hurt ankle.Obviously, the pressure felt close to unbearable, but the captain grit through it as sternly as he could. For now, there did not seem to be much choice left in his hands, and Alfred loathed that, but did not snap back. This was a chance to recover, after all, even if he ws unsure were he was going to be taken. "To be f-fair, I would rather not die."

"I should think not." Jean, satisfied that the bleeding was at least slowed, bound the injury up quickly with another strip of his shirt. Well that's not good... The swelling of his ankle was quite apparent, and it was beginning to turn colors. "Right. Can you move? Up you go." The Frenchman held out his arm to help brace the injured party. It seemed he had hit his head, and he hated to have to move him, but there was no way anything more could be done with the waning light of the torch. "Come now, we'll go out to the cove." His tone would have been more appropriate for an actual afternoon stroll, rather than the current situation.

The constant pressure made him want to cry out. Alfred grit his teeth hard, another hiss of pain still managing to get out around it. His ankle did not wish to cooperate, and it made most of his weight end up being distributed between his good leg and Jean's able two. "I-I hate to say this, but can we t-take this slow?" he muttered out, his free hand that was not practically bracing him body against the more stable one rubbing at the blood on the back of his skull.

Jean tried not to wince. It hurt to watch. "Of course, dear Captain," He spoke with mock dignity, letting him set the pace. "It isn't far, if that's any encouragement." He's so cool... Maybe it's just because he's hurt, but this is a nice temperature. Even at their slow pace, it wasn't long before they got to the well-lit cavern that housed the wreck. "Wait here, I'll be right back." Jean, though he was reluctant to let go (for what reason he couldn't say), sat Alfred down on the sand by the smooth-worn wall. With a final glance back, he took off to his supply room (via a quick dive into one of the air-filled inner rooms) and returned within a few minutes.

Alfred gave his customary grumble at the mocking tone, placing on mental blinders as best he could. He just had to get to this spot where Jean insisted he be, and then he wouldn't have to keep dragging his injured leg about. Finally the stepped into the cavern's light, the seaman holding in a wince at the sudden brightness beyond the torch's glow. His eyes darted about the large wreck, a faint grunt leaving his lips at the sight of it. How he could be gotten in, in this current state, he had no clue. Willingly, the Captain sat against the stone wall, nodding silently. He could wait... Hopefully sad wouldn't get into any of these cuts, but for now, he was content to just rest his leg.

"Okay... Let me see." Jean, dripping with seawater, brought forth a waterproofed rucksack. Nimble-fingered, he had the boot off in a moment, and was immediately setting to work on a splint to keep it from becoming even more agitated. Clearly, he had dealt with crises like this before. "So," After a drawn out moment of quiet, Jean spoke, continuing in his task. "You didn't ever answer my question. How did you come to be in such a predicament?" He had let the matter rest long enough, but now that the immediate stress of the situation had dissipated, his curiosity returned full force. If you won't tell me, I'll have to trick you into it. He was expecting a full-on rejection, or even silence.

The sudden lack of direct pressure drew a gasp from the seaman. To finally have it freed was both a blessing and a curse. The pain was not as focused, now, but he knew the swelling was now unhindered, and if anything had snapped or broken, they would no longer be held in place. Alfred would give a grunt or try to shift his leg, from time to time, but for the most part, he was content to simply sit still. he was also quite content to mum up about the exact why he was even in the area. There was just a little too much discomfort for his usual response on such questions.

Well, that's not much of a surprise. Jean merely continued smiling, finishing off a simple splint to keep the joint immobilized. "Ah, you Englishmen, always so cold. No wonder your women are so enamored with the French..." He made deliberate eye contact with the captain as he made this remark. "I'm sure you'd rather have a chair than sit on the sand like this. What do you say we go to my parlor and get that leg up?" He waited for the response, though he intended to get him there whether he wanted to or not. There was no way he'd be making it back to town in his current state, and leaving him out on the beach was simply unthinkable.

A low, dangerous growl was the only reply Alfred made at that little remark. Jean could play his little game, the French prat, but he was above such childish things. Besides, it wasn't like any woman seemed to be in a rush to marry this slippery thief. If was only a fascination, not infatuation. "I would rather have stayed in that tunnel then go into any parlor of yours," he snapped, irate. His pride was aching enough with the slip and his wounded ankle. To become a 'guest' of this criminal's? He would rather loose the whole leg, entirely. Arms crossed, the captain stared the other down, eyes narrowed and frown firm.

"Oho, injured, but we still have our pride, I see." Jean snickered, seeing in his eyes that he had put his foot down. Stubborn. I should have expected this. He should be glad I don't wait until the tide comes in. He took a few steps off to the side, calculating how best to move the man into the ship. Of course, he always had the option of knocking him out again, which would make moving him significantly easier, but there was a great possibility that he would worsen any injuries already there. I suppose I shall have to be creative with this. Making a sudden movement, he got behind Alfred, pushing him away from the wall sharply. If he had judged his weights and angles correctly, it should be enough to force him to his feet. Then, if he was lucky, it would be a matter of momentum to get him to the ship. Getting him inside, of course, would be a different matter, but he'd cross that bridge when he got there. So long as it was all solved before the tide came in, it didn't matter much how it happened.

In truth, he should have expected the attempts to begin as soon as they did. Alfred had thought himself to have at least a few more short minutes,at least, before the damn Frenchman would try to act. Of course, this was not the case. He shouted, body trying to react when it was already too late. The sudden push sent him forward, his legs positioned to the point where he was on both feet for a moment before he went tumbling forward. His ankle screamed in protest, as did a small spot on his back and his voice.

"Now, that's more like it." Jean muttered in French, glad to be nimble. Darting forward, he caught Alfred on his shoulders, practically dragging him towards the wreck. If you were a normal person, I'd say you'd thank me later, but knowing you... Well, I'll settle for a grunt and a glare. He tried to take his mind off of how heavy Alfred was. Of course, he knew that much, as he was quite a bit taller and had a broader build. "Give me a moment, Captain." He smiled as he realized the state of matters. The captain was now quite a ways into the shallow water, far enough that wading back to shore with a bad leg would be very difficult, and the water was cold enough that it would be rather uncomfortable before too long. Of course, he expected that Alfred would hold out for quite a bit, being such a stiff-upper-lip sort of gent, but not indefinitely. Clambering up the rope, he passed through the room and out onto the deck, where one of the small boats used for outings was still held aloft. Of course, it was at an odd angle now, but that could be accounted for. Lowering it without too much difficulty, he peered over the side of the ship to see what Alfred would do.

Jean was going to be skinned alive. Alfred swore to God, he would do it, somehow! He thrashed, at least as much as one could in his current position, growling obscenities towards the male dragging him along. Most of them consisted of the same basic message; "Let me go!!" When they hit the water, a pang traveled up his injured leg, and soon, the chill began to invade in a less than pleasant way. Just moving about too much was string up grit and sand, and it was certainly not making this any more comfortable! He glared, heatedly, up at the face peering over the side of the wreck as the little boat was lowered down towards him. He growled and glared at Jean, the small boat, and the water for a minute before he resigned himself enough to sit, unhappily, in said boat and held onto it tightly.

Under normal circumstances, he might have responded with a smug comment, but at this point, that was the last thing he wanted to do. Surprised at how soon Alfred got into the boat (but not at all surprised at his expression) Jean used his weight to hoist the boat up. It was normally a two-man job, but with the aid of one of the many water-logged barrels that were left on deck, he managed to pull it up far enough that the captain could get onto the deck. "Welcome aboard," He seemed genuinely glad, still standing on the other side of the deck. That's a look that could kill if ever I saw one. He determined that a good distance between them would be best until the other party calmed down a bit. "How about some tea? You can make it into the cabin yourself, yes?" He headed for the door himself, leaving it open, but keeping a worried eye out to make sure that he made it. Meanwhile, he got to work on starting up the small stove in the corner. He hadn't the slightest idea what sort of a person the captain of the ship had been, but he got the impression that he had been an odd one. With that passing thought on his mind, he tapped into his supply of fresh water and put it in a kettle to heat. All that was left to do was to figure out where he had left the tea.

If Jean had been close enough, the Captain was sure he would have at least tried to throttle him twice before those words had even had the chance to leave his mouth. The thief had certainly judged his current mood right. Alfred stood, leaning on the ship's railing, somewhat, until his "host" had disappeared into the interior of the ship. His scowl stayed pinned on that point before he hobbled after the Frenchman in as dignified a manner as he could manage. "Where did you even get the tea?" he grunted, standing in the doorway and looking at the little room. He was partially surprised to see the little stone, unsure whether the wreck's current occupant had brought in along, himself, or if the worn old thing actually had been aboard at the time of the vesicle's sailing years.

((Hehehehehehe vesicle)) "Bought it." He replied, finding it wedged into the corner of his chest. The small space was soon filled with the smell of brewing tea. Of course, elaborating any more than that was just asking for things to get worse. "Have a seat, please." He gestured to a worn chair against the wall with a crate in front of it. The brocade fabric had probably been quite nice when the chair was new, but on account of use and exposure, it was faded and worn. Jean, judging that the tea had had enough time to steep, poured some out into a chipped mug and brought it to Alfred.

Alfred took his dearest time sitting down. The tea he smelled was common enough that the price wasn't high enough for Jean's usual breed of stealing; he accepted that it had been bought, regardless of the inkling suspicions that the money used to purchase the good was more... tainted. Finally, though, the seaman sat himself down in the motioned to chair, trying to find a comfortable position for all aching parts of his body that would hopefully last. With a critical eye and a tease word of thanks, the Brit took the mug, feeling its warmth for several minutes before even daring a sip.

Jean, taking a seat on a second crate, folded his legs and watched. He wanted to start up a conversation to pry into the man's motives, but at the moment, nothing came to mind, so he remained quiet, merely observing Alfred's movements. So, it was back to the lapping waves and breathing. After a long pause, he finally picked a venue of conversation. "So, how have your sisters been? Well, I hope." He didn't recall whether or not Alfred knew that he was in acquaintance with his sisters, but it had been a while since he had had a chance to visit with either young lady.

Alfred almost choked on the mouthful of tea. he had forgotten, for a minute, there, that his vagabond actually knew his sisters, really, and he needed a moment to recompose himself. Clearing his throat], the Brit smoothed his ruffled feathers and leveled Jean with a calm, nearly detached, look. "They seem to be doing well, if their latest letters are to be believed..." he spoke, each word seemingly plucked carefully. he took another small sip of tea, glancing to the side for a moment. "I take it, then, that when I return to my own ship I am going to have to tel them you are either in my brig or doing well."

"Yes, yes, I'd say. Perhaps a bit lonely as of late, but quite well indeed," He didn't bother suppressing the grin that came up when his sisters were mentioned. It was too difficult to do, watching him try to control his expressions in that uniquely British way. Jean reached over to the pot and refilled the mug before returning to his own seat and folding his legs again. He looked quite comfortable, although he was still wet from his brief dive.

Jean was given a low growl for his troubles, the Brit looking away yet again. "Yes, well, I'll be sure to relay that to them," he muttered, hands folding just so about his mug. Alfred almost wished to squirm on this ratty old chair, his toes twitching. The splint hadn't even been on for very long, but it was starting to itch, already. The captain restrained himself, taking a firmer hold about his tea.

"Hm?" Jean noticed that Alfred looked suddenly rather uncomfortable (or at least, moreso than he was already) , shifting his posture. Narrowing his eyes, he thought about it a moment. Aha. That's probably it. "Something the matter, captain?" Of course, giving in that easily wasn't very entertaining, and while he was immune to the captain's wrath, he might as well keep things interesting. I'd be perfectly willing to help you if you'll tell me. Lying is pointless, and you'll only draw your own suffering out longer...

How he wished that wither the itching, Jean, or both would leave him be! Fingers tightening about the mug dangerously, Alfred let the question hang in silence for some time. He still had some pride! Any more help from the Frenchman, and he may gag from the sensation in the pits of his stomach. After what felt like only a few minutes, the wounded one gave a bitter sigh and nodded. The inching would not leave, and Alfred knew clearly that something had to be wrong. "The splint," he grunted, pretending to observe the nearest wall in detail as opposed to Jean. The humiliation would hopefully be somewhat lessened if he did not look at his "rescuer".

Jean had given up the question as lost after the long silence, but then was surprised to see the captain nod. "Itching? All right. Sit still, if you would." Jean didn't sound the least bit smug, only a bit concerned. He actually admitted it. That was unexpected. He got down on his knees and undid the splint. Sure enough, there was plenty of sand. It would have been a bit itchy to begin with, but with sand in it, it would have been unbearable. "Ah, this'll probably heal right up, Perdenkly, if that's any consolation." He said, getting a good look at the injury as he brushed the sand from it. "You'll be out of here before they know to look for you."

Alfred hissed as the leg in question was one again prodded and bothered, again. At least the damn sand was being gotten out of the area...It did not stop his leg from twitching at the soft feeling of fingers against the wounded flesh of his ankle. At least if Jean was correct, he would be gone, soon, and the pain would be, as well. The captain took a tired sip of tea, letting Jean work undisturbed. "I hope you don't mind sand all over..."
